Japanese-style western dish

by Hiroyuki

Since the beginning of Meiji period(1868-1912) the Japanese had rapidly modernised and westernised in various aspects such as clothing, architecture, education, diet and so on. As for diet, until then they didn't generally eat animal meat including beef, pork, chicken and so on because of Buddhist teachings but immediately after the advent of the new era, sukiyaki or beef hot pot dish became popular at first. Westernization of food had spread and produced many kinds of Japanese-style western dishes. Among them, my fevorite one is Tonkatsu or pork cutlet. It is fair to say that this is a typical Japanese-style western dish.

The photo below is a Tonkatsu specialty restaurant where is very popular and always busy. It is worth waiting for the seat. Yummy!Japanese-style western dish
