Japanese Numbers You Can Use Every Day

by Mieke

For those who would like to order Japanese numbers anyway
(for instance when you want to order more than just one beer),
here’s a list of so-called ‘counters’.
Depending on what you are counting, the number changes,
but the ones listed here are for ‘miscellaneous’ items.

1 hitotsu
2 futatsu
3 mittsu
4 yohttsu (be careful to pronounce the ‘o’ short, otherwise you’re saying ‘eight’)
5 itsutsu
6 muitsu
7 nanatsu
8 yoohtsu (be careful to pronounce the ‘o’ long, otherwise you’re saying ‘four’)
9 kokonotsu
10 tooh
