As a private tour guide in Kyoto, I am sometimes asked by my customer that they want to get in touch with local life in the city. In this case, I take them to a local shopping arcade. It is not famous Nishiki food market, but very much local market where only local people come to purchase daily necessaries.

There are groceries, fruit store, 100 yen shop, bakery, pastry shop, confectioner, coffee shop, box lunch shop, Ramen, Udon, Sushi restaurants which are popular with local people, book store, bicycle shop, barber shop, and so on and so forth.

The other day, I was strolling this kind of shopping arcade with my customers upon their request and they wanted to buy a piece of mandarin orange in front of a fruit shop. Unfortunately they are sold as a set of five pieces in a bowl only. However I just asked a shop lady if they can buy just one piece. She said, “ OK, OK, there is no problem. I will sell it with discounted price because the customer have come to Japan from a country so far away!”.

Sometimes we have a small but nice contact with the local people like this. My customer was saying that it became a nice memory with local people in their trip to Japan.

We met Rick at the Fushimi Inari shrine. During our tour of Kyoto, we changed our minds often on what we wanted to do next. Rick was easy to work with, and adapted and attended to all our needs. His knowledge of Kyoto is deep as he was born here and has lived his whole life here. The day we met Rick, the heat in Kyoto was 38 C.... but Rick kept us cool, listening and attending to all our needs...

We had a fab day with Rick, starting really early to avoid the crowd and the heat. We enjoyed Rick’s knowledge about the city history and traditions, and understood much more about religion and temples thanks to him. It was great to discover Kyoto with Rick’s help. He also took good care of us and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience that we would definitely recommend.

We spent the day of the Gion festival with Rick, who was a knowledgeable, well-informed guide to some well-chosen spots around the city. We started off wanting to see the famous parade of "floats," actually rolling carriages with drummers, musicians, and community members. Rick figured out a strategy of going to several spots along the route where we would have the best viewing opportunities, whic...

I highly recommend Rick. He made our visit to Kyoto the highlight of our Japan visit. Since we were first time visitors to Japan and a diversified group of senior ladies, I let Rick plan our itinerary. He did a wonderful job making accommodations for our group; picking wonderful sights, shrines, temples, gardens, etc.; very informative, punctual, friendly, etc. Each day was a new and wonderful...

We spent two days with Rick seeing wonderful things in Kyoto. Our tour spanned the things that I expressly asked Rick to see and do, such as visiting the most important historical and cultural sights, visiting out of the way gems, shopping for artisanal chocolates, seeing life as a native would and experiencing the many crafts that the area is known for. We truly enjoyed our two days with Rick- th...
