Japanese people admire autumn leaves because of the  beautiful colors but...

Admiring  "新緑 - shinryoku” or spring green is my favorite around this time of year!

You can see white dots in between different hues of green.  They are "Yamazakura" or wild cherry trees in full bloom near Aikawa gold mine.

Cherry flowers are not always pink!  This is "御衣黄 - gyoikou" and it has greenish petals! It's also beautiful.

Persimmon buds and a hill covered with Shinryoku in my neighborhood.

Feast for the palate in spring!

This is bracken, one of the popular wild edible plants provided by Mother Nature in spring.

There are few varieties of vegetables in spring and these edible plants are a real blessing from nature.

Another popular plant, Udo.  Udo tempura is soo good!

Matsugasaki village -  It was early May and the shrine festival was held on that day.

Terraced rice paddies in Iwakubi village.  Several paddies have been turned into buckwheat fields.

In early May,  farmers start planting rice seedlings.  These paddies are small and irregularly shaped and farmers have to use small machines.

We can enjoy Shinryoku from late April till early May.  It lasts only about a week or so but these scenes make my mind and stomach full with joy!  I love driving around to find another beautiful and picturesque scenes in Sado!

The day was fantastic! Fujiko understood exactly what kinds of things we would enjoy, and introduced us to many interesting people! Fujiko made our Niigata tour, though only for a day, very memorable. She took the extra mile to grant our request to visit a nearby place which was not included in the itinerary. She has good command of the English language and communicating was a breeze. I highly recommend her if you need a guide in Niigata.

A typhoon was approaching Niigata the day before we were meant to leave on the hydrofoil to Sado. Fujiko-san happened to be in Niigata and we meet and were comforted by her assessment. Took the ferry the next morning under calm conditions and spent a really nice day with Fujiko. Saw the Toki’s, ate great Soba and apples, picked persimmons and figs off a tree. Visited a famous sale brewery that mak...

We were so happy and fortunate to have had Fujiko-san as our guide and Kei-san as our driver in Sado - they truly made our trip special and memorable for our whole family. Typically we don't like guided tours because they are often canned and sterile, but the tour with Fujiko san was the complete opposite--very personalized, unique, and special throughout. Highlights are too numerous to list bu...
