Enryaku-ji Temple

The head temple of the Tendai-shu sect established in 788 by Saicho, a Buddhist monk and ambassador. The temple consists of three areas and more than 200 temple buildings dotting Mt.Hiei, which is about 848m high.

Enryaku-ji temple is registered as a world inheritance. It has many national tresure. Many great monks, like Honen, Shinnran, Eisai,Dougen, and Nichiren appeared from here. So Mt. Hiei is called the mother mountain of Buddhism.

If you want to go there, you can go by car. From Otsu city, it takes about 40 minutes. I can drive you.

Toshiyo-san went above and beyond for our day tour with her in Kyoto. She allowed us to customize the tour and we ended up doing more than we originally planned. She is thoughtful, kind, and definitely knows her stuff. You won’t be disappointed and I highly recommend her.

“ The best of Kyoto ”

Toshiyo our guide met us in the lobby of our hotel. She then proceed to discuss what we wanted to see and what she thought we should see. This a well spent 15 minutes, because of that our day with Toshiyo was educational, informative and enjoyable. At the end of the day all three of us (my wife, and our grandson) thought it was the best way to see Kyoto, plus Toshiyo educated us on how to get a...

It was overall a good experience. I thought she would have had more planned up front rather than us deciding upon arrival about where to go. We did desire a little more historical information about the locations we visited.

Toshiyo was patient, very knowledgeable, kind, friendly, and considerate. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! We had about 8 main must see places on our list and we saw all, but 1 because of the time constraint (we arrived late from Tokyo). With the complex and multiple modes of transportation between the places we wanted to see, we would’ve never been able to accomplish this without her! It was a particularl...

“ Customized tour in Eastern Kyoto ”

We started our tour at the Silver Pavillon, and then moved south towards Kiyomizu-dera. Toshiyo showed us to many beautiful places we would not have found on our own, explained and pointed things out. It was a nice experience, and for us as non-native speakers her english was clear and easy to understand.

“ Amazing and Unorthodox Tour of Kyoto ”

We wanted to go to antique and craft stores around Kyoto which caught Toshi off guard but she brought us to the exact kinds of stores we wanted to go to. As we walked around Kyoto, Toshi made sure to teach us about the history and quirks of the city. For lunch she brought us to an amazing old noodle house which itself was an experience. An overall wonderful day with a very knowledgable guide.

“ Amazing day in Kyoto! ”

Toshi was a great guide for my first day in Kyoto. We went all over the city, which allowed me not only to take in some amazing sights but also to get to know the bus and subway systems so I could use them by myself the rest of the trip. Toshi also gave me tips on additional places to go and the best timing to avoid the crowds. For example, I was planning to go to Kiyomizu-dera on the 2nd day b...
