Enoden, one of the most loveable local trains in Japan

One of the oldest railways in Japan

Enoden, one of the most loveable local trains in Japan

Enoden, the Enoshima Electric Railway is the sixth oldest railway in Japan and has been in operation for more than 100 years. It is a single-line railway connecting Kamakura station and Fujisawa station, both entrances to major sightseeing spots in Japan popular among Japanese and overseas tourists.

Between the terminals are thirteen stops and the train runs the distance of 10 kilometers in 34 minutes, managing lots of curves and narrow places so close to hedges and yards of houses that you can almost peek in dinner tables of the families from the train windows!

Lots of places to enjoy visiting along the line

Kamakura is one of the must-visit places in Japan for its historical attractions as once the capital of Japan governed by the samurai class. After changing trains from the Yokosuka Line to the Enoden Line, if you would like to visit Great Buddha and Hase Temple, please get off at the third stop, Hase station, and to go to Enoshima Island, Enoshima station is the one.

If you get off at Inamuragasaki station, two stops away from Hase station, that's where you can enjoy great views of Sagami Bay, Enoshima Island, and Mt. Fuji on a fine day. And there are still many more places to visit and to drop by from each stop of the line.Enoden, one of the most loveable local trains in Japan

Eye-catching designs fun to see

Every time you take the train, you'll be amazed by the varieties of the colors and painting of the carriages.

Below are some of them.

It even turns into a streetcar !

Between Koshigoe station and Enoshima station, the train runs through a shopping street. On both sides are fish stores, super markets, seafood restaurants, an old-fashoned photo studio and many other small shops, and when the train is running on the street, all the veicles stop until it runs away.

Eri’s wonderful guided trip around Kamakura was the highlight of out trip to Japan. She was very knowledgeable and explained everything in great detail. She was able to make adjustments at the last minute to our...

My wife Sandra and I spent a great day in Kamakura with Eri. She knows Kamakura inside out and she clearly loves it, which was apparent from the way she showed many of its highlights to us. Eri met us at the station dressed in a beautiful kimono which was a delightful touch. The tour designed for us took us to several temples around Kamakura and her explanations of the history and significance o...

My sons (aged 14 and 12) and I decided to visit Kamakura as a short-getaway from our Tokyo trip. As I was travelling with my teenagers, I was looking for someone who could show us around all the shrines and temples (which could otherwise have been boring without any guide). We're very happy to have found Eri. Eri is an excellent guide who knows Kamakura very well. Dressed in a kimono, she has a pl...

“ Comprehensive half day intro to Kamakura ”

Excellent
4 months ago Traveler: Minnie -   Tour Guide: Eri

We booked a half day tour with Eri because our flight arrived early in the morning and we could not check in to hotel until 3 pm. We took the wrong train and arrived 15 mins late into Kamakura but Eri was very patient and cheerful. She also helped us store our luggage at a "secret" local place near the station which was full. The tour was very informative and fun and was well worth the time spent....

We were met at the Kamakura train station by a beautiful woman dressed in kimono. Eri was informative and entertaining throughout our walking tour of Kamakura. Not only did we see the beautiful shrines and learn of their histories, our tour included walking through the quiet residential streets away from the main stream to these sites. Eri's love for sharing her knowledge and insights was unmistak...

We had a lovely day with Eri! My family (including twin 4 year old boys) took the train (which she helped us with finding the correct train/time) from Tokyo to see the Daibutsu, and with the help and knowledge of Eri, we saw the Big Buddha and so much more! Traveling with kids is so different and she helped make it fun for them and interesting and relevant for us. We first went to the main shrine,...

We had a wonderful time with Eri. Being a local, Eri was very knowledgeable of the history, culture and legends of Kamakura. She speaks English extremely well and she made sure we were comfortable and did not feel rushed at all. My kids (ages 9 & 13) loved Eri. While we waited for our dishes at the table during lunch, she gave each of us a beautiful packet of origami paper and started showing us...
