Enjoy the serene atmosphere at Daikaku-ji Temple

by Tatsuhiro

(History of the temple)
This temple is the "Sohonzan" head temple of the Daikaku-ji faction of Shingonsyu Buddhism sect founded by the Reverend Kobo-daishi Kukai. It was originally built as the villa of Emperor Saga when he got married in early Heian period (794 to 1191) and was later enlarged and given the name Daikaku-ji Temple  in 876. It is also the place where "Ikebana" flower arrangement began and the location of Samurai dramas and other modern dramas.
There are a total of eight buildings, a ceiling painting, a large pond and others in the spacious precincts which have been built with all sorts of Japanese construction technique and are a pleasure to your eyes. After getting out of the temple compound, walk a bit to the rim of large Osawa-ike Pond. Not only the clear water, but also fish, lotus flowers (in summer) and birds will welcome you.
(How to enjoy)
Just walk inside the buildings according to the instructions. You can get in touch with the serene environment and the traditional Japanese culture.
The entrance fee is 500 yen and  the JR fare is  240 yen from Kyoto station. If you take a bus, the fare is 230 yen.

Tatsuhiro is very kind and respectful. He was eager to share local insights, advice and directions on inquiries, even those unrelated to the tour. I was impressed that he was well versed with Japanese-Philippine history and felt his sincerity in wanting to better understand our culture and people. We had to put extra effort to understand his English at times.

We (my family 3 kids aged 15,14,11) visiting from Chicago enjoyed the day with Tatsuhiro. He made sure to ask what we wanted to do to plan the trip and then adjust to our needs during the tour. We enjoyed Kyoto and my kids were able to engage and learn to much about a city they had never visited. Highly recommend!

Tatsuhiro-san was truly valuable in navigating the kyoto bus system. He had thoughtfully prepared for the tour by keeping in touch with us via email prior to our arrival in Osaka, and he had even visited the sites on our itinerary a week ahead just so he can brief us on what we could expect to see and how to better maximize it, as well made sure all necessary reservations were made on some of the ...
