Emperor Meiji

Meiji is an era name, which is from 1868 to 1912. During the period of 44 years, the 122th Emperor, Emperor Meiji was on the throne. That is to say each Emperor has an era name, and that in other words, it is the Japanese dating system. Now, the current 125th Emperor is Emperor Heisei. Emperor Meiji was famous for transforming Japan into a modern world power. After his death, Meiji Jingu Shrine was founded in 1920. Furthermore, in the ground named Jingu Gaien neighboring to Meiji Jingu Shrine, there is a splendid building named Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery which was completed in 1925. If you visit there and see the 80 pieces of paintings from the birth to the death of Meiji Emperor, it might become good opportunities to deepen your understanding of Japan's modernization and westernization. In my tour, A colorful walking tour in Tokyo, Meiji Jingu Shrine is one of main destinations and Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery is on the route. Why don't you join me?
