Cormorant Fishing (an intangible cultural property)
The history of Cormorant Fishing
The history of Cormorant Fishing in the Kiso river area dates back to1300 years old.
It's a classical method of fishing with 10 cormorants which are controlled by strings of Usho(fishing master).
Cormorant Fishing here in Inuyama started about 350 years ago . You can watch the spectacular skill of Usho closely on a roofed barge alongside of the fishing boat.
How to train cormorants
Cormorant Fishing on the Kiso river uses sea cormorants, which were caught by the seashore. As young cormorants can be easily tamed and learn quickly how to catch fish, two-year-old or younger cormorants are caught and trained little by little here for Cormorant Fishing .
Cormorants are fostered just like loving family members of Usho (fishing master). Usho allways touches cormorants with bare hands and takes good care of them to make a reliable relationship with cormorants . It takes about 2-3 years to train them to become an excellent cormorant for fishing.
The life of wild sea cormorants is about 5 years . However the sea cormorants in Cormorant Fishining on the Kiso river can live 10 to 20 years !
Cormorant Fishing is designated as an intangible cultural property.
Why don't you enjoy the dramatic scenes on the barge with the background of Inuyama Castle (a national treasure)?
Cormorant Fishing can be seen from Jun1 to October 15.
