    Disposable Wooden Chopsticks, Waribashi,

Waribashi are disposable wooden chopsticks, mainly used in restaurants, hotels, and inns.

Each waribashi is split into two with the top end connected.

Waribashi are split up completely when they are used.

At expensive restaurants, waribashi are placed in paper pouches, but at inexpensive restaurants bunches of chopsticks without paper pouches are placed in chopstick holders.

The origin of waribashi goes back to the prehistoric age, when people offered food to the gods.

It would be impossible to offer food to gods with reused chopsticks.

Japanese people had long regarded reused items as dirty.

So when they invite a guest in their house, they offer brand new chopsticks instead of family-used chopsticks.

This practices show respect for the guest.

There have been many controversies over the use of waribashi because thrown-up wooden chopsticks are a waste of wooden resources.

In Japan, waribashi are made of unused parts of timber to be disposed of.

I simply can not say enough about Masaki and his skill as a tour guide. Not in a million years would we had been able to see so many beautiful sights in Kyoto without his ability to move us from place to place, purchasing entry tickets without hassle but also knowing the fastest ways in & out plus the timing of our arrivals & exits were spot on. Masaki & Steve had quite a long conversation about...

Masaki was a very helpful guide. Even before we started the tour with him, he gave us directions to get to Kyoto (as we were coming in on train) and helped me source a wheelchair for my Mum who needed it after she had a fall the day after she landed. He made the whole thing easier. I am glad we had him. He also provided in depth info about Kyoto through information that he put together in a bookle...

We experienced a most relaxing yet educational day with Masaki, touring the sites of Uji, home of matcha. Because my husband’s mobility and energy was compromised, Masaki chose this outing for its length and flat terrain, plus he is very atuned to the history there. He was most patient with our challenges yet delivered a wonderful tour.

Excellent and easy communication with Masaki during preparation for the tour. Masaki speaks very good English. He answered all questions promptly and thoroughly and he made suggestions and sent photos of alternative sights to see when one of the places we wanted to go to was not open on the date of our tour. He went out of his way to book us additional services like the rickshaw and a van which wa...

We did not simply see the sights, we learned about the history of Zen Buddhism, meditation practice and breathing and Japanese philosophy. After the tour was over, he sent us over 70 excellent photos that he had taken during the day, w...
