 Chanbara

Chanbara is a sword battle.

Samurai warriors fought in battlefields from the ancient times through the early modern period.

Chanbara

They trained themselves hard by practicing sword martial arts.

Defeating enemies in battlefields was their ultimate goal.

But once peaceful society was established by the Tokugawa shogunate, military power came to be of no use.

Political or administrative or academic power had a say.

As time went on, chanbara became a boy's play.

In the age, when children had fewer playthings, chanbara was the most popular play among boys. They often masked their faces with furoshiki  in make-believe game chambara.

Chanbara

Today, boys have no longer played chanbara.

A computer game has taken the place of it.

Chanbara was totally abandoned, out of fashion.

However, in recent years, powerful supporters for chanbara appeared.

Chanbara

Young ladies have played sword game instead of boys.

Chanbara has come back as sport.

Young women use a air-filled rubber sword instead of a bamboo sword or a wooden sword.

Players try to strike anywhere on the opponent's body to win the game.

Because of its fun and fitness, sport chamber has spread overseas.

Moving bodies actively and sweating adequately help  players to be free from the lack of exercise and stress.

Samurai warriors in the olden times would be stunned if they saw young ladies playing chambara for fitness.

Masaki could not have worked harder. He took us to all of the places we wanted to see and tailored the itinerary perfectly. He is full of knowledge and good humour. We did not simply see the sights, we learned about the history of Zen Buddhism, meditation practice and breathing and Japanese philosophy. After the tour was over, he sent us over 70 excellent photos that he had taken during the day, w...

Masaki is an excellent guide. Being a previous history teacher, his knowledge allowed us to appreciated the sites much more. While English is his second language, he was understandable. We only had 10 hours during our cruise to see Osaka and the surrounding area, but he catered to the destinations and activities that we wanted in the short amount of time allowed. He also had good and prompt commun...

Masaki made our day in Kyoto very special. From the moment we met he was warm and engaging, and shared his obvious love for Japanese culture and history. He explained the itinerary clearly, and taught us to navigate the Kyoto train and bus system. During each part of his tour he shared his knowledge about not only the places but also the context in Japanese history and culture - particularly th...

“ Wonderful day with a thoughtful guide! ”

I was eager to see lots of Kyoto in the limited time I had there. As a former History teacher, Masaki helped me work out a great itinerary to make the most of my time, prior to my trip. The day of my tour, Masaki arrived promptly and immediately began pointing out places of interest from steps from my Ryokan. Masaki never missed an opportunity to point out the things that were of importance to me,...

Masaki San was explaining very well with a clear and delicate voice: he makes you dive right into the stories as it was a movie ! With the homemade illustrated book that he carries around, you can picture it even more ! He is not only a good guide, but he is also an amazing human being ! Even if the day spent with Masaki San was rainy, he managed to make it sunny :) We recommend him 100% ! ...
