Another winter scene of Sado, this time Shukunegi

by Fujiko

Mochitsuki (making rice cakes) , a once popular event before New Year for every household, was held in Shukunegi.

Japanese people offer mochi (rice cake) to the God of the New Year.  So we make mochi during the end of December

We used to make mochi using pestle and mortar.  But nowadays most of the household use mochi cooker for convenience.

So, this is quite a rare occasion for most of us to witness authentic "mochitsuki".

Let the "mochitsuki" begin!

First, just steamed mochi rice is roughly mushed by one person.

Then, one person pound mochi dough with a  pestle and the other turn it over adding a small amount of hot water

to make mochi dough softer.

It is important for the pair to rhythmically pound mochi dough while it is still hot.

The photo above, even a tourist can join and pound mochi with locals!  People in Shukunegi are really  friendly and nice.

After the mochi dough was pounded smooth and soft enough,  homemakers shape a batch of mochi in small pieces.

Now, it's our turn!!  Ready, grandpa?

Let the Mochi Party begin!!

Mochi was served in two kinds of dishes.  One is Oshiruko-style, eaten with sweetened red bean paste.  The other is Zoni-style, eaten in vegetable soup.

Shukunegi locals, young and old, enjoyed eating mochi dishes with homemade vegetable pickles, all cooked by local homemakers.

Everybody looked back on the year 2015 while eating delicious mochi and wished for the happiness of the coming year.

Shukunegi is one of my favorite places in Sado and I really wish for the happiness and health of the locals!

I'm still a blog begginer, but it's a lot of fun to tell you more and more about Sado next year.

Happy New Year 2016!

See you soon!

We recently had the pleasure of meeting Fujiko who gave us an awesome tour of Sado Island. After travelling for a month in Japan it is without doubt that I can say that this tour with Fujiko was the best. Fujiko has a great wealth of knowledge and adapts the tour to what you what to do and see. It was extremely easy communicating with Fujiko. A lovely lady! Cannot recommend her higher! Cath Cr...

“ Outstanding "Off the Beaten Track" Tour Guide ”

Excellent

Fujiko is, quite simply, the best guide we have ever used -- anywhere. She grew up on the island -- and runs a small farm. She knows Sado Island like the back of her hand. She speaks very good English. But, the best part is that Fujiko avoided the tourist traps. She took us to unusual and interesting places - including an impromptu picnic high up in the mountains. That was the highlight of our ent...

“ One of the high points of our trip! ”

Excellent

Fujiko did her best to accommodate our atypical request which took us off the beaten path including touring government offices and riding in taxi cabs. She was knowledgeable, flexible, pleasant, personable and timely. Not the usual 'tourist' tour. Knew the area. Very good communication pre-tour (by e-mail). Fluent in English and Japanese (working on French). Highly recommend her!

Soon after booking a day tour of Niigata snd a day tour of Sado Island, Fujiko was in contact with us to find out what we were interested in seeing and our interests. Her verbal and written communication skills were excellent. She provided a list of sites then developed an itinerary after we had provided input. Our itinerary included visiting three farms and picking cherries and strawberrys. In ad...

Our tour guide Fujiko was a blessing for my family when we toured Sado island. Fujiko even surprise met us at the ferry station to ensure we found the bus stop. She and our bus driver Keiki were gracious and knew the island inside and out and she was also able to make a last minute change in our itinerary when we wanted to experience lunch at a local eatery. I highly recommend bookin a tour wi...

We experienced Interesting highlights of Niigata with Fujiko. Marketplaces, historic architecture, sake tour/tasting and the Niigata City Aquarium. Fujiko did an excellent job of coordinating the tour within the time limit, something we would not have been able to do on our own. We thoroughly enjoyed our time spent with Fujiko. She is an excellent guide.
