I had a very good opportunity to attend the titled seminar at a culture center in Nagahama today. I was surprised to know that there were no less than 1,300 castles in this area in the period of the Provincial Wars, since the district used to be one of the most strategic places for powerful warlords in order to climb the ladder to the top leader in those days. The two experts perfectly agreed that castles group comprising of about 20 in the range of 10km along Hokkoku street (北国街道) is highly precious in the history of castle building. (These castles have been assigned as the ones apparently built in the spring of 1583 AD, when the so-called Shizugatake Battle (賤ヶ岳合戦) was fought.) The experts also put emphasis on the highest degree of perfection of Genbao-jyo castle (玄蕃尾城), the fortress of the defeated warlord, Katsuie (柴田勝家).
